The Power of Commitment

“In the thirty-two years that I have worked with people going through the process of organizational engendered career change, I have come to believe that desire and courage are the components that constitute commitment.  The willingness and the ability to step out into new areas of work that essentially place a person on his or her own, requires commitment to the task and the determination to do whatever it takes to find the right combination for success.  Fundamental to this outcome is the desire to be independent and the courage to take measured risk and to maintain effort with consistency of purpose even when the goal seems difficult to discern in the distant haze.

But as Theodore Roosevelt said, “It’s not the critic who counts. It’s not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled. Credit belongs to the man who really was in the arena, his face marred by dust, sweat, and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes short and short again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming. It is the man who actually strives to do the deeds, who knows the great enthusiasm and knows the great devotion, who spends himself on a worthy cause, who at best, knows in the end the triumph of great achievement. And, who at worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly.”

The victory of failure

You may have heard it said that “you can learn from anything that doesn’t kill you.” Which is probably true because within every challenging experience, lies the seed of a blessing. Therefore, when we are focused on the problem we rarely see the blessing that frequently appears retrospectively.

Unfortunately, we tend to personalize failure and see ourselves as failures rather than attributing failure only to the experience itself. The fact that we had the courage to take action and learned from the experience is a victory in itself.

Listening to the inner voice

We have an incredible power that, when used, lets us live more effectively and with a greater sense of fulfillment. It’s called intuition, an inner knowing, which is independent of any reasoning process and that reveals the answer immediately. Our challenge is to be willing to trust our intuition which is our inner voice.
We can trust our “gut feeling” all the time no matter what the circumstances. Therefore, conduct the research and do the numbers necessary to generate the options. Once done, listen to your gut—it will always be right.

The beauty of mindfulness

To empty the mind of any thought, while possible, is a difficult task. However, with practice mindfulness or mindlessness can be achieved and even sustained over short periods of time. The benefits make the effort worthwhile. In such a state immunity is enhanced, stress is reduced and sleep is induced, all resulting in a general sense of well-being.
One who is serious about achieving the state of mindfulness can go to the internet and find many sources of support in the form of workshops, coaching and related activities and information. This may require a significant investment in time and energy; however, the outcome is worth the effort.
